These little balls might look like decadent truffles, but what if I told you they are actually powerful plant-based medicine packaged in an easy-to-take, spicy, chewy ball of deliciousness? Say hellooooo to Ginger Bites! An easy-to-make, all-natural herbal upset stomach remedy for all kinds of tummy troubles.
For the longest time, I wasn’t a big fan of gingerโit just wasn’t my thing. But then pregnancy came, and with it morning sickness that lasted well past the AM part of the clock dial. Much to my chagrin, my midwife suggested I start consuming a lot of ginger to help with the nausea, and I listened like a good little pregnant lady. The ginger didn’t completely take away my all-day sickness, but it took the edge off enough that I could at least function. Thus began my therapeutic love affair with ginger root!
It took a few more years before I started to love ginger for its culinary uses, but I eventually found my palate loving ginger almost as much as my body did. I now drink a full pot of (very strong) ginger tea every single dayโit’s good for my soul and my body! I use ginger extensively in both my cooking and my herbal remedies.
After seeing how ginger helped smooth the waves of morning sickness for me, it absolutely wasn’t a surprise to me when I started to do more research about its medicinal properties and discovered just how powerful of an anti-nausea treatment ginger is. Ginger has been proven to be a wonderful treatment for all kinds of nausea and vomitingโfrom the pregnancy-related kind to nausea and vomiting caused by chemotherapy or even post-surgical nausea that many patients suffer from.
Ginger isn’t just helpful in relieving nausea though. Ginger has been used for centuries to treat all kinds of stomach issuesโgas pains, diarrhea, indigestion, motion sicknessโit really is the superstar herb when it comes to tummy troubles. Ginger is also incredibly safe to takeโunless you are allergic, no known side effects exist. Of course, always consult with your healthcare professional before starting a new treatment or trying a new remedyโeven if it’s a safe culinary herb like ginger.
The one hiccup with ginger as an upset stomach remedy is that you need a decent amount in a relatively short amount of time to help with acute conditions. You can take encapsulated gingerโbut those pills get pricey (especially if you’re dealing with long-term nausea like thanks to morning sickness).
A more affordable way to get your dose of ginger? Make these Ginger Bites at home! These bites are spicy, tender, and easy to pop in your mouth the second your tummy starts to feel off (or taken about an hour before you start traveling to avoid motion sickness).
These bites are made with four simple ingredients: ground ginger, unsweetened cocoa powder, sea salt, and raw honey, and I find they are medicine I really enjoy taking! Like I said, they do have a super spicy ginger bite to them, but I find that enjoyable! This recipe cuts the ginger with unsweetened cocoa powder (yum!), because if you went for 100% ginger powder, your throat might catch fire! Even with cutting the ginger in half, these are pretty potent. If you don’t love that kick, you can make these balls into smaller “pills” and just swallow them whole.
These Ginger Bites will last in the fridge for between 3-4 weeks, but they really preserve better after a quick trip in the dehydrator. After about six hours in the dehydrator on the lowest temperature, these bites will last in an airtight container in a dark spot for up to three months.
