Halloween is creeping up on us, and what better way to celebrate than with a spooktacular spread that includes a snakewich party sub? Party subs are your secret weapon for feeding a crowd of hungry monsters. These colossal creations are not only impressive but also incredibly delicious.

What is a party sub?

So, what exactly is a party sub? It’s not your everyday sandwich; it’s a colossal creation designed to feed a hungry horde. Picture a sub roll that’s about six feet long, stuffed with an assortment of deli meats, cheeses, veggies, and condiments. It’s perfect for Halloween gatherings that might need a feast on a fearsome scale.

How many people will a 6-foot sub feed?

The hoagie rolls we use for this snakewich line up to be about six feet of sandwich goodness. That’s a standard length for a party sub and can typically feed 12-24 hungry ghouls and goblins, depending on what other foods you have in your spread

Protip: Get the hoagie rolls!

The hoagie rolls were the best choice of all the breads we tested. The long loaf of French bread and the Italian bread were too fluffy, making the fillings slip around and fall out when you tried to take a bite.

What do I need to make this snakewich party sub?

To make this party sub exactly as pictured, you’ll need:

  • Hoagie rolls
  • Mayonnaise
  • Deli turkey
  • Sliced cheese. Any sliced cheese will doโ€”some of our favorites include Swiss cheese, provolone cheese, cheddar cheese, or American cheese.
  • Shredded lettuce
  • Tomatoes
  • Oil and vinegar
  • Black pepper
  • 4 pimento-stuffed olives

Protip: Swap smart!

Turkey is a widely beloved sandwich flavor, but it isn’t the only option! If you want some variety, swap in some deli ham, salami, pepperoni, chicken, or additional veggies.

Are these party subs gluten-free?

As long as you use gluten-free hoagie rolls, yes! If you are making some portions gluten-free and some with white or wheat bread, make sure you use separate utensils and keep the different breads apart to avoid cross-contamination.

How do I make this party sub look like a snake?

Set out your hoagie rolls and use the assembly line method to fill them all. Then, slice each roll in half and arrange all the pieces in a curving S-shape on a large platter or piece of parchment paper. You can make one extra-long snake if you have a large table or make two twin snakes.

To make the snake face, skewer two stuffed olives on toothpicks on the “front” hoagie. Cut a slice of cheese into a forked tongue shape and arrange it so it sticks out of the sandwich piece with the eyes.

Can you make party sandwiches the night before?

We did try making these the night before, and the results were…not great. The large tomato slices make the bread soggy, and the lettuce loses its crunchโ€”it just isn’t good eats. You are best off making the party sub right before your guests arrive.

  • 8 ounces sliced cheese
  • 2 cups shredded lettuce

  4. Insert 2 toothpicks into the end hoagies, then skewer the pimento-stuffed olives on them to make the eyes.
  5. Cut a slice of cheese into a snake tongue shape, then place it in the layers of the end of the sandwich with the eyes so it sticks out and looks like a tongue. Serve!

Notes

  • You can use sourdough, wheat, white, or gluten-free hoagies to accommodate your guests!
  • These sandwiches are long, so we recommend laying them out on a long piece of parchment for easy cleanup.
  • You can add sliced olives, banana peppers, ham, spinach, pickles, red onions, etc. to make these your own. You can also do an Italian version for one of the snakes and the turkey version for the other when serving guests.
