Meet my husbandโs favorite salad dressing. Sweet and tangy, honey mustard is super versatile and works with a ton of different flavors.
Why should I make my own salad dressing?
A good condiment can make all sorts of dishes more exciting. When you make your own, it costs less and is entirely customizable to your tastes. Check out our Salad Dressings 101 post for more on taking your salads and sauces to the next level.
What ingredients do I need to make a honey mustard dressing?
This recipe is so simple that you probably wonโt even have to print it out! In fact, there are only four ingredientsโplus a little bit of salt and pepper. Hereโs what youโll need for a homemade honey mustard dressing.
- Dijon mustardโFor that classic tangy honey mustard flavor
- HoneyโThe sweetness behind the dressing
- Apple cider vinegarโIโd recommend using raw, unfiltered apple cider vinegar
- Extra virgin olive oilโOlive oil is the base of the dressing
- Salt and pepperโFor a bit of seasoning

You can use any plant-based oil in this salad dressing as long as itโs mild in flavor and a liquid at room temperature-i.e.no coconut oil.
What else do I need to make a honey mustard dressing?
Not much! The only thing you need to make it is a wide-mouth mason jar with a tight-fitting lid. Add your ingredients to the jar, tighten the cap, and shake! If you prefer a smoother dressing or your arms need a break, you can always use a blender or a food processor.
How should I store my honey mustard dressing?
This dressing can be stored in an airtight plastic or glass container. A mason jar makes the perfect container for storing this dressing, so if you used the method above to make your dressing, all you need to do is pop it in the fridge.
How long will my honey mustard dressing last?
This salad dressing is a vinaigrette, so it should last a little longer in the fridge than dairy-based salad dressings. Your honey mustard dressing should be good for one to two weeks in the refrigerator, as long as itโs in an airtight container.
Wholefully Protip
If your vinaigrette appears hard or chunky when you pull it out of the fridge, donโt panic! Itโs natural for olive oil to harden a bit in the refrigerator. Allow it to warm up and shake it vigorously to regain its smooth texture.
What pairs wells with this honey mustard vinaigrette?
This dressing is the perfect dipping sauce for all kinds of chicken (we love it on chicken tenders!). It also makes a great chicken marinade. Itโs the dressing I use for my chickpea apple spinach salad and my apple walnut salad in a jar. This dressing is tangy and sweet, so you can use it in almost any salad.
Is this vinaigrette vegan? What about gluten-free?
Yes! This honey mustard dressing is 100% gluten-free! Whether or not itโs vegan is a more complex question to answer. In the end, it comes down to your personal preferences and beliefs. Some vegans believe honey should be off-limits; however, others think itโs okay because it comes from an insect and not an animal.
If you decide to leave out the honey, you can use another natural sweetener in its place. Agave syrup and maple syrup are both excellent substitutes.
