It is really hard to mess up a burger. I mean, seriously, when is the last time you had a bad burger? Sure, there are plain burgers or dry burgers or fatty burgers, but really does that ever stop you from eating and enjoying it?
It doesn’t me.
A few years back, I was visiting my Canadian in-laws (and spending hours counting how many times “eh” was said in a single conversation) and dinner time came. We had drank our fair share of Moosehead and were all starving for something good to soak up the alcohol. So my mother-in-law went to the kitchen and whipped up some burgers for my brother-in-law to grill.
The burgers looked unassuming. Honestly, I thought it was going to be one of the “normal” burgers I listed above. Not that it matteredโ I was drunk and hungry! And like I said, no such thing as a bad burger.
And then I took a bite, and it was life-changing. Juicy, flavorful, beefy, and with a tinge of onion flavor. It was awesome. It tasted like my mother-in-law had spent hours coming up with a flavorful spice mixture and picking out the perfect cut of beef. But like all good food, the ingredients were actually deceptively simple: beef, breadcrumbs, egg, and onion soup mix.
Yup, that was it. I was floored! I headed home the next week and immediately hit up the kitchen to craft a Wholefully-style version of Garden Onion Burgers (sans the packet of processed onion soup mix). It turned out to be pretty easy to recreate the flavor using what I had in my spice rack.
Youโll want to make these onion burgers! They take a regular beef burger and elevate it to an awesome dining experience. Enjoy!
Garden Onion Burgers
These Garden Onion Burgers are no ordinary plain pattiesโ they have the flavor of onion dip and the juiciness of a good burger.
Ingredients
For the burgers:
- 1 pound ground beef
- 1/3 cup breadcrumbs
- 1/4 cup finely chopped green onions
- 1 large egg
- 2 tablespoons minced parsley
- 1 tablespoon onion flakes
- 1 teaspoon granulated onion
- 1 teaspoon sugar
- 1 teaspoon sea salt
- 1/2 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper
For serving:
- 4 slices sharp cheddar cheese
- 4 burger buns
- Lettuce leaves
- Sliced tomato
- Sliced red onion
- Sliced avocado
Instructions
- Place all ingredients in a large bowl and mix by hand until just combined. Divide the
mixture into four patties. Use your thumb to make an indentation in the center of each patty—this helps the burgers stay flatter and cook more evenly. - Preheat a grill to medium high. Add the burgers and cook for about five minutes, then flip and top with cheese, if using. Cook for 2-5 minutes on the second side, or until the cheese is melted and the burgers are cooked to your desired doneness.
- Put a piece of lettuce on the bottom half of each bun. Top with a cheeseburger and then add sliced onion, tomato, and avocado. Serve hot.
Notes
- Instead of grilling, you can also cook the burgers in a grill pan or cast iron skillet. Cooking time and temperature will be similar.
- If youโd like to simplify the recipe and have a packet of onion dip or soup mix on hand, you can use that instead of the seasonings. Simply add one packet to the beef, egg, and breadcrumbs.
